Lucy Manette discovers that her father is not dead, as she had always believed. He has just been released from the Bastille, where for decades he was being held for refusing to cover-up the Marquis St. Evrémonde's crimes. The two marry, with Lucy never knowing that Charles Darnay is, in fact, Charles St. Evrémonde—nephew of the marquis who sent her father to prison and against whose entire family he was sworn vengeance.
