Ellen’s father refuses to allow her to marry Lieutenant Cholmodeley until he has proved himself to be a brave soldier. When war breaks out between England and Russia, the Lieutenant is called to the Crimea and Ellen follows as a nurse under Florence Nightingale. There, she witnesses her lover cast into danger in the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade. Inspired by Tennyson’s poem The Charge of the Light Brigade.
